Judgment of Paris – A Blind Tasting Experience

Join the Permian Basin Chapter of the Wine Society of Texas for a fascinating evening as we revisit one of the most historic wine tastings ever held — the Judgment of Paris.

On May 24, 1976, British wine merchant Steven Spurrier organized a blind tasting in Paris to celebrate the American Bicentennial. Renowned French judges were asked to evaluate some of California's finest Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons alongside prestigious White Burgundies and Bordeaux wines.

The results stunned the wine world. The judges ranked the California wines ahead of their French counterparts in both categories, forever changing the global perception of American wine. The winning wines were the 1973 Château Montelena Chardonnay and the 1973 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon.

For our reenactment, participants will experience the same style of blind tasting by comparing:

  • Château Montelena Chardonnay

  • A comparable White Burgundy

  • Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon

  • A comparable Bordeaux Red

Taste each wine without knowing its identity, cast your vote, and see whether your selections match those of the historic 1976 judges.
